The End of November on M Street

Happy Hour DCThe temperature has started to dip...

...so come join us for a sip!

From all of us here at Sign of the Whale we hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving! We sure had a blast last week with everyone who came back home for the holiday and stopped by to visit.

We kicked off the party week on Wednesday with our amazing Thanksgiving Eve party. The place was bumpin’ from start to close! We had Virginia native DJ Big Mike blasting the hits while our local bartenders helped throw the party by slinging drinks all night. Everyone from local kids back from college, area bartenders, family members and some of our closest friends came by to celebrate the best drinking day of the holidays with us.

On Thursday while most were nursing their hangovers and eating turkey all day, bartenders Pat and Devin celebrated their Thanksgiving here with us! We opened on up for our loyal Eagles fans to come by for the game and they were true to form. Fans stopped by to watch the game and help us cheer on our favorite team, evening bringing along family members to join in. Every week, win or lose, our fans never let us down which is why we love being DC’s #1 Philly bar. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again for this Sunday’s game against the Patriots. Chef Donnie will be cooking up your favorite cheesesteaks and Manager Kevin will lead you in chanting “Fly, Eagles, Fly!”.

People swarmed in all last weekend to party with us (and escape their families for a bit) and it was an awesome time! We celebrated Connie’s birthday on Saturday in our private loft bar. She reserved the area for her and her friends so that they could enjoy some delicious catered food while also getting their own personal VIP bartender. Looking to celebrate your birthday with a reserved space? Contact Kelly at kellyh@signofthewhaledc.com to inquire about our private and semi-private areas. Kelly can also set up drink specials or open bar packages for you and your guests so that you can enjoy your birthday to the fullest!

Also on Saturday we threw our November birthday bash to party with all the November babies. We throw the birthday bash every month so that you can feel like the whole bar is celebrating your birthday, no matter the time of year. Are you a December baby? Go to our website to sign up for our December Birthday Bash so that you can celebrate with all your friends! Sign up quick as spots are limited.

Coming up this week are gearing up for holiday parties to go into full swing! We are welcoming Syracuse Alumni on Saturday so that they can throw their own Ugly Sweater party. Alumnae from all over DC will be dressing up (or technically down) to see who can boast the ugliest sweater of them all. If you are looking to set up a holiday party just give us a ring at 202-785-1110 or shoot Kelly an email. Helping spread the holiday cheer, and pour the holiday drinks, is what we do best at Sign of the Whale.

If you haven’t checked it out click on over to our “Best Bar Staff in DC” blog and get to know the SOTW family. Then come visit us for a drink this week and see a few familiar faces!

Meet Mike Heller...

Birthday Party Venue DCBartender and Resident Santa

Here's an extra special Staff Spotlight, just in time for The Holidays!

This week we want to give a special shout out to Mike Heller, one of our fabulous bartenders! Mike has worked at Sign of the Whale for about a year, but boasts 10 years of bartending experience! He has helped to open bars in National Harbor, Baltimore, New York, and Las Vegas and creates extra special custom drinks!

His favorite drink to make is one of his delicious creations called “Passed out on the Beach at Night.” This drink is sure to deliver and includes Cabo Wabo Reposado tequila, peach schnapps, Blue Moon (and many more secret ingredients!)

Mike’s favorite drink is Bourbon and he’s a diehard Redskin fan! On his time off you can probably find him roaming around DC, VA, and MD catching a game, having a drink with buddies and visiting his old spots!

You can catch Mike at Sign of the Whale throughout the week, pouring up drinks for happy hour, throwing the party late night, or creating special drinks for your birthday or private event. We wanted to spotlight Mike this week, because next week he’ll be taking on another special role…Santa!

For the last 4 years, Mike has dressed up as Santa and bartended to help collect toys for Toy’s for Tots. The event is a hit every year and all are invited to participate. Join us next Thursday, December 10th from 6-9pm. Donate an unwrapped toy and receive ½ priced drinks. That’s what we like to call “drinking for a cause!”

Hey everyone! For those who didn’t stop by last week to see for themselves we are glad to announce that we have finally decked the bar in holiday cheer! We hung lights all around and Manager Kelly brought a special touch to our front window by decorating it with wrapped presents and stockings. If you come by this week and see them make sure to let Kelly know she did an awesome job!

This weekend we had an amazing time with everyone that got to come by! The bartenders were making drinks left and right and the dance floor was moving and grooving till close. Friday we got to celebrate Leah’s birthday! Her and all of her friends came by for drink specials and no cover, we can’t wait to see them all again soon. We have our Birthday Bash coming up on Saturday the 26th so if you’re a December baby go on our website to sign up for a spot. Space is limited so sign up soon to guarantee a spot!

Saturday night was slam packed! We had tons of people coming by for our late night happy hour and for birthday parties. We were also honored to host seniors from George Washington University’s basketball team. They came by with friends and family to help celebrate their amazing season thus far. DJ Dior was on the 1’s and 2’s all night and as a GWU alumni and former basketball team member himself everyone couldn’t have had more fun!

We finished off the weekend with an outstanding win by the Eagles against the Patriots! Our fans came by and we all cheered so loud that the Eagles players themselves must have heard us! We can’t wait for this Sunday’s game against the Bills to see if we can pull off another amazing win. We will also be hosting a fundraiser during this week’s game to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Fans, customers and staff will all be shaving their heads to help raise money for this amazing cause. If you’re interested in signing up or would like more information contact Kevin at kevind@signofthewhaledc.com
